Raft Style: Jim Osbone and Gerald Nolan
Bonsai Basics 7pm, Field Collecting: Bill Butler
Jim Osborne and Gerald Nolan will demonstrate the features of raft style and do a demonstration of the same. This is a facinating style which mimics the effects of a tree which has fallen and the limbs of which grow to tree-like structures themselves.
Prior to the meeting, Bill Butler will discuss the basics of harvesting trees from field locations. This includes yards, but will primarily focus on swamp collecting of bald cypress. February is not too late to venture out into the swamps to collect your very own bald cypress! Consult he two articles written by Bill on the GNOBS Aricles Page for a little pre-meeting prep.
Tuesday March 13, 2012, 7:30pm
Juniper Give-Away and Workshop
Bonsai Basics 7pm, Pot Selection: Jim Osborne
One of the benefits of a GNOBS membership is the opportunity to work side by side on trees with other members. You cannot learn bonsai without actually working on a tree! GNOBS will be giving away 25 trees to PAID members to work on at the meeting. Excess trees will be styled for the 2012 auction in August.
Prior to the meeting, Jim Osborne will host the bonsai basics corner to discuss pot selection. Bonsai, as you know, literally means tree in a pot. Thus the tree is only half the presentation. Different trees and styles have different pots which best show off the tree year round. Come learn more about this subtle art.
Tuesday, April 10, 2012
Azaleas (Tentative Topic)
Bonsai Basics 7pm, Repotting: Gerald Nolan
The topic for April will be azaleas. The specifics of this meeting have yet to be determined.
Prior to the meeting, Gerald Nolan will discuss repotting techniques and needs for your bonsai. In March, you learned how to best show off your tree in the right pot. Now it's time to actually put it there. Come learn more.
Tuesday, May 13, 2012
Fukien Tea: Rick Hamilton
Bonsai Basics 7pm, Field Collecting: Bill Butler
Past GNOBS President, Rick Hamilton will discuss fukien tea bonsai. This is a gentle tropical plant with small flowers. It's shiny leaves give the plant a luster that makes it a unique species for bonsai.
Prior to the meeting, in the Bonsai Basics corner, the discussion will be BUGS! With Spring in full swing and Summer just around the corner, you may be suffering with an infestation that refuses to go away. Before you use the wrong chemical on your tree, come learn about using the right remedy for your problem.
Tuesday, June 2012 (Time and Date to be determined)

GNOBS Annual Auction!
Viewing of trees: 4-6pm
Auction begins promptly at 6pm
The GNOBS Annual Auction is the must-do bonsai event on the New Orleans calendar. If you enjoyed last year's auction, well you're going to just love this one. 2011 marked the first time we hosted the auction at the Marine Corps meeting hall. Now that we know what it takes to hold the auction there, the 2012 auction can only get better.
