Raft Style Bonsai

Bonsai Basics: 7pm, Bill Butler, Field Collecting

Jim Osborne and Gerald Nolan will demonstrate the features of raft style and do a demonstration of the same. This is a facinating style which mimics the effects of a tree which has fallen and the limbs of which grow to tree-like structures themselves.

Prior to the meeting, Bill Butler will discuss the basics of harvesting trees from field locations. This includes yards, but will primarily focus on swamp collecting of bald cypress. February is not too late to venture out into the swamps to collect your very own bald cypress! Consult he two articles written by Bill on the GNOBS Aricles Page for a little pre-meeting prep.

From The President

To all my bonsai friends,

Please forgive the change this month as the second Tuesday falls on St. Valentine’s Day.  No way do I want any angry spouses to come looking for me.  Also, we have to keep in mind Mardi Gras – so there you have it.  February 7th. Oh, no … That’s my lovely wife’s birthday!!  Well you may not seem me that night, we’ll see.

Just a few things to keep in mind for this month.  February is a slow month in the bonsai year, however, it is a good time to wire your deciduous and conifer bonsai.  Also spray them with a dormant oil, to ward off any pests that think your bonsai would make a good home.  Spray early or late in the day, not in direct sun.  Also, it’s not too late to do any collecting from nature.  It’s still too early to do any repotting, but it’s not too early to take inventory of all your supplies so that you will be ready for Spring. Make sure that you have pots, soil, etc. so that you will be ready for the busy Spring growing season.

Enjoy Bill’s bonsai basic, and the program on raft style that Gerald and Rick put together for you.
